Terrarium Care

The first step to consider when owning a terrarium is adhering to the correcting lighting needs.  Correct lighting ensures the plant will efficiently undergo photosynthesis; a process where plants convert light energy into their own food for growth and development.

Without the correct lighting needs, your plants will start to die off and the ecosystem will begin to rot.  Maintaining the most suitable lighting needs will help lengthen the longevity of your terrarium!

Lighting

Bright Indirect Light

Bright indirect light means your terrarium has an unobstructed sky view without the direct sun rays hitting the glass.

Dry or Succulent terrariums can withstand a little bit more direct sun, but limit sun exposure to no more than 5 hours.

Filtered/diffused light

Dappled light are direct sun rays that have been diffused through a curtain or dappled sun rays through blinds (plants love this).

This type of lighting is very good for terrariums since it mimics the lighting of their natural environment i.e. forests, savannah, or desert.  (Think of light flowing through a tree canopy).

The added striation of direct sun encourages stronger plant growth, while still maintaining a cool temperature from the shade.

If your terrarium is sitting in direct sun, limit sun exposure to no more than 3 hours.

Watering

Succulents and cacti are very hardy and low maintenance plants.  They can be found in environments such as, temperate forests, grasslands, deserts and many other biomes.

Due to natural sometimes harsh environments, these plants have evolved to store water in their leaves.  An interesting tip that’s useful is to use ice cubes or ice chips to water your dry terrarium.

Sprinkle 2-3 ice cubes (depending on the terrarium) every two weeks around the plant(s), let the ice melt, and the plant will gradually take in the water inside the terrarium.
